Habib Koité & Bamada 3 ½ stars
Foly! Live Around the World [World Village]
Mali’s Habib Koité combines traditional melodies and rhythm with his own international leanings. He’s a world-class guitarist with a smooth vocal style and a songwriter who ably combines personal, political and romantic concerns. His anti-tobacco hit “Cigarette Abana” made him a pan-African star in 1991, and his Bamada Band is one of Afro-pop’s best live units, as is evident on the two-and-a-half hours of music on Foly!. These extended tracks give every band member an opportunity to shine. Keletigui Diadate’s balafon excursions (African marimba), Abduol Wahab Berthe’s swooping six-string bass and drummer Souleymane Ann’s ability to break down the beat in unexpected ways all leave lasting impressions.
