[Excerpt]

Meanwhile back on the salsa scene Bio Ritmo, who hail from Richmond, VA, have released their fifth cd.  Obviously enamored with the classic sound of Nuyorican salsa from the ‘70s and ‘80s, they write original tunes that have a familiar feel and jump forward fro the get-go with high-energy.  Straightforward but embellished with funky Fender Rhodes keyboard textures, they are fundamentally strong but at times lack subtlety.  Many tunes start off with the cowbell clanking which got a bit tiring for this reviewer.  The cowbell is, of course, a crucial percussion instrument in salsa, but the great ones, such as Roberto Roena, understood that when you build a song up and enter with the cowbell towards the middle it has a truly dramatic effect like an ecstatic shift of gears.  Minor criticism aside, several tunes here stand out, such as “Atrevete,” which cleverly integrates some Brazilian flavor, and “Para los Romperos,” which featuring soaring psychedelic keyboards and extended percussion jams.  04/01/04
