Bio Ritmo is a nine-member salsa band from Virginia whose beginnings go back to 1991. They've toured the United States several times and in Puerto Rico.

The band writes and plays original salsa based strongly on the classical styles. They include some modern techniques but strive to keep to the traditions of the music alive. Salsa is more than the rhythm. It's also the lyrics. Lead singer Rei Alvarez says that he wants the subject matter of his songs to be "of relevance to real life. With pop music, listeners are spoon-fed bland lyrics and catchy melodies that neither challenge the intelligence nor offer anything artistically new."

All the lyrics are in Spanish so I was unhappily unable to really experience their true worth. However, the music can be appreciated no matter the language. This is my first extended experience with salsa. On the first spin of the disc I thought it all sounded the same. Listening a second time with more critical ears I found it very interesting in the complexity of the rhythm and the band's creativity within the boundaries of the style. I need to learn Spanish.
