Herdon Observer, 'Bio Ritmo' Latin Band Takes Depot Stage Friday >>

Friday night, June 3rd, at 7:30 p.m. on the Depot Stage, fans will be swinging and swaying to the salsa sounds of Bio Ritmo. Picking up where Salsa's golden age left off in the late 1970s is the mission of Bio Ritmo. For the past twelve years, Bio Ritmo has treated audiences across America to its own unique and inspiring vision of what a salsa band can be. "The Salsa Machine," as Bio Ritmo calls itself, writes songs using elements from the classic age, keeping within the style while retaining the spirit of experimentation that once gave Salsa its strength. Beginning with its birth in 1991 as a rhythm-driven drummer's ensemble, Bio Ritmo has sought to connect with its fans every second it spends on stage and with every song it commits to record. With each of its first three recordings Bio Ritmo introduced fans to entirely different facets of its sound. From the diamond in the rough that was 'Que Siga La Musica' to the more refined, more Cuban 'Salsa Galactica' and on to their major label debut, 'Rumba Baby Rumba' (Mercury Records). Having satisfied its curiosity experimenting with new styles and techniques, the band has eagerly returned to its roots. Embracing the stripped-down and straight-up stree-wise salsa sound so rare in today's comtemporary Latin music scene, Bio Ritmo's "old school with a twist" approach is converting skeptics and delighting dancers across the globe.

"Bio Ritmo's current nine member line-up seems indestructible," says the Independent Weekly and their latest self-titled CD has been described as their most inspired recording to date. Fresh in its energy and confidence, the sound evokes the freedom of classic Nuyorican salsa. Flavored with bomba, samba, charanga, and even a bolero, the record treats the listener as well as the dancer with its incredible grooves, inspiring solos, and soul-searching lyrics. It has been chosen as "Editor's Pick" by Descarga.com and described as "Terrific old-school...with plenty of sabor and verve." Bio Ritmo was a Festival favorite in 2003. An incomparable live performance and strong musicianship make Bio Ritmo's performance on the Depot Stage Friday night one you won't want to miss.
