Newsday (New York City), HOT SPOT: Satalla >>

by Martin Johnson

Where: 37 W. 26th St., Manhattan, 212-576-1155

Why: Global rhythms in a worldly space. Although Manhattan is one of the most ethnically diverse islands on the planet, you wouldn't know it from the live music scene. There are clubs specializing in one music or another and a few that are "eclectic" because they feature three or four styles. Satalla intends to remedy that situation by offering all kinds of music from all over the world. African bands, Latin bands, Tuvan Throat singers have all graced the stage of this Flatiron District newcomer since its opening a few months ago. Satalla is a bi-level space that accommodates 200 and has a kitchen and a full bar. The club's design features drawings with Day-Glo colors and lots of black light, giving the interiors a kaleidoscopic effect, which is appropriate given the wide range of music presented there.
