The brainchild of Michael Yaacobi, a fifty-two-year-old former civil engineer from Israel, this new world-music venue is decorated in expanded-consciousness style: the simple space's chief feature is neon-bright psuedo-psychodelic murals that shine with a Technicolor intensity, thanks to black lights, which also cause the waitresses' white tank tops, patrons' sneakers, and the club's drink menu to glow as well. The name Satalla, according to Yaacobi, is Arabic-derived Israeli slang meaning "high on life." Satalla the club aims to expand the musical consciousness of its patrons bringing in top acts from around the globe--booked for the coming months are such headliners as the South African vcalists the Mahotella Queens, the Malian kora master Mamadou Diabte, and the Moroccan singer Hassan Hakmoun. 09/29/03
