Boban Markovic Orkestar Balkan Brass Fest (Piranha)
Anyone who watched Emir Kusturica's film Underground will recall the rolliking soundtrack by a Serbian Gypsy band, the Boban Markovic Orkestar, who wax funky and blue on their latest disc. "Balkan Fest" opens the album with the rolling rhymthic flash of a New Orleans parade band but with solos tuned to Near Eastern frequencies. A fierce, feisty melancholy fills this music, with its affection for the joy and sadness of life.
