To approximate the sound that Boban Markovic and his dozen-strong orchestra make, imagine a rowdy marching band with a punchy drumline, then drop in an equally athletic and boisterous Balkan Gypsy brass band.  There are moments of pure Rocky-on-the-steps brass triumphalism – four flugelhorn players can do that.  The sprint along, then cool down briefly before dusting things up again.  While nowhere near as abstract, this disc brings to mind Anthony Braxton’s 1976 Creative Orchestra Music – it’s as potent a reminder of just how much ass a marching band can kick.  With some odd-time phrases and ecstatic, woozy reed playing, you won’t hear this at the Macy’s parade.
