Mahmoud Fadl
The Drummers of the Nile Town
"Cairosonic - The Drummers of the Nile in Town"
www.piranha.de

Here is the third installment of Mahmoud Fadl's "Drummer of the Nile" set. The story behind the creation of this record is as intriguing as the music. Fadl took great pains and great traveling to find musicians of the caliber he saw in Cairo as a child, and-- well, just read the liner. It's quite interesting. The 56 minutes of music here sound like the soundtrack for a walk down a busy Cairo market street. Crazy drums you can't identify, a bunch of wind instruments you, well, can't identify, and flurry of hands moving faster than anything you might have ever heard in some points. Lots of great reminders of the primitive roots of what we know as a groove. A CD full of traditional Egyptian music may land in somewhat of a limited niche, but it's pretty darn good listening if you want to check out another culture and see what they're all about.
