Hartford Advocate, Mahmoud Fadi >>
Fadi grew up in Nubia, in southern Egypt. This is music from the confluence of Africa and the Middle East. The pinched nasal sound of the nakrazan, sounds a lot like the raitas (a double-reed oboe-like instrument played by the master musicians of Jajouka whose playing bewitched Rolling Stone Brian Jones, Ornette Coleman and others). Bass drums boom, and the skins of higher pitched drums are coaxed with fleet fingers to get a fluttering , crackling sound. The highs and lows of drumming are like a pairing of tuba and piccolo. The crisp sound of snare drums shows up. This is ecstatic and hypnotic stuff. Many tracks clock in under two minutes-bite-size pieces ideal for anyone who suffers from rhythm fatigue. 04/15/04
