The nubian master drummer takes listeners on an imaginary trip down a Cairo street where traditional musicians used to hang out while job hunting for gigs at weddings and other celebrations. In search of players from the former Hasaballah brass band, Fadi runs into fellow drummers, in an accordionist and players of exotic reed instruments that are associated with belly dancers and snake charmers. The musicians join him in spontaneous-sounding jam sessions that are rich in cross rhythms, syncopation, and virtuosity. Eventually the brass players - elders who were once court musicians for King Faruk of Egypt - show up and lay down a couple of tracks. Their instruments are Western, but their elaborate melodies , intricate rhythms and improvisatory style stem from the musical heritage they share with Fadi and friends. 04/11/04
