Vibe Magazine, Review >>
For the last 20 years, sub-Saharan band Tinariwen has been blending music and politics well enough to be banned in both Mali and Algeria and to be critically acclaimed internationally. Formerly Touareg freedom fighters,Tinariwen now uses electric guitars, hand-percussion, and soulful vocals to make subtle, conscious music. Language barrier be damned; from the Ali Farka Toure riffs meet Bo Diddley beats of "Le Chants de Fauves" to the foreboding anger of "Khedou Khedou," Tinariwen's desert blues are universally familiar. These songs ring louder than bombs. 02/01/03
