Pulse!, TINARIWEN 'The Radio Tisdas Sessions' (World Village) >>
Tinariwen are members of the Kel Tamashek nomadic ethnic group. For
thousands of years they roamed the desert that is now part of Mali, Niger,
Libya and Algeria, but today they are a people without a country, persecuted
by many nations. Tinariwen started as a traditional group in a refugee camp,
but after hearing Bob Marley, Dylan and rock bands from Morocco they "went
electric" to create a rock infused, trace inducing music that has become
popular across Arab Africa, even though it is often banned due to its
message of ethnic pride and political struggle. On "The Radio Tisdas
Sessions" producer Justin Adams (the Ry Cooder of Britain) stays out of the
way, letting the music speak for itself. Abrasive male vocals, in the manner
of a delta blues moaner, minimal acoustic and electric guitars, sparse
electric bass, traditional percussion and a female chorus weave a tough, but
compelling, roots music spell. j. poet 08/05/02
