This band is made up of members of the Tuareg, a nomadic people of the Sahara Desert, who have faced brutal repression from Mali, exploitation by Libya, and a host of other problems. The politics are complex, but they won't keep you from being affected by this music. A veritable guitar army (the group is made up of six guitarists, a couple of percussionists, and a female chorus), Tinariwen produces a hypnotic, slow-burning style of interlocking guitar riffs, call-and-response vocals, and understated (but relentless) percussion.
