Tinariwen
"The Radio Tisdas Sessions"
World Village

I'm really not sure how to go about reviewing this CD. While the music is interesting to listen to it's more about who and what the music is than the music itself really. Tinariwen , originally Taghreft Tinariwen meaning "Edification of the Lands", is a group of Sahara Nomads who have taken up modern instruments to battle the everyday war, exile, and the drought they face. The band was formed in 1982 and have been making waves ever since. They were born in refuge camps in Libya where they heard the revolutionary power of artists like Bob Marley and Bob Dylan and proceeded to trade their traditional instruments for a dark rock revolution of sorts. The songs on "The Radio Tisdas Sessions" all follow the same hopeful yet weary sounding pattern. You can definitely hear the influence of the darker sounding songs of Bob Dylan. This is mostly dominated by thin picked guitars, various percussion , and native vocals. The feeling here though is what gets you. After reading up on this band you realize that what you are hearing is something that is totally foreign to most of us. You are hearing hope from a place that seems to have no hope. This CD is astounding, what you are hearing is history. "The Radio Tisdas Sessions" is a cultural revolution set to music. I know this sounds like an odd review but I encourage everyone to check this CD out. This CD has very little to do with music and everything to do with the lost culture of an entire people. www.worldvillagemusic.com
