TINARIWEN
THE RADIO TISDAS SESSIONS
Wayward / World Village

If you have heard the CD Desert Blues, or any of the music by Ali Farka Toure of Mali (like his CD with Ry Cooder), you will have some idea of what this music sounds like already.  This is an earthy, organic music of the nomadic Taureg Bedouin people, much loved and appreciated especially at their annual Desert Festival.  Tinariwen consist of seven musicians plus three women singing choral support.  The players are Ibrahim, Kheddou, Mohammed "Japonasis", Abdullah, Hassan, Foy Foy, and Seyid, playing various guitars, bass, percussion, as well as vocalizing by everyone in the group.  I believe they do not give their last names due to fear of political reprisal, for as stated by their publicist, "The Songs of Tinariwen are petitions of political and cultural self determination."  The Tuaregs have suffered many political hardships in Mali, and that, plus the hard desert environment in which they dwell, has profoundly affected the way this music sounds.  This is a plangent, pleading, soulful music of clarity and depth.  It carries hypnotically, so that you can really sense the desert feeling, as if you were hearing the music in the cool of the evening after a long hot day in the sands.  I recommend this CD highly! - Root Doctor 01/01/03
