Now in her 70s, Miriam Makeba still has a voice that's astounding and mellifluous. "Reflections" is a celebration of Makeba's 50-year career, during which she became the first African to win a Grammy (in 1965, for her album with Harry Belafonte), a tireless anti-apartheid activist (Makeba was exiled from her native South Africa for 40 years) and a symbol of songs that touched people on every continent (John F. Kennedy was a big fan). Makeba breathes new life into her first international hit, "Pata Pata," from 1967, as well as a string of other favorites, including the Brazilian bossa nova "Mas Que Nada," the wrenching "Love Tastes Like Strawberries" and the jazzy "Where Are You Going?," written by her ex-husband Hugh Masekela. Makeba's first release in four years, "Reflections" is that rare album where nearly every track is a knockout. -- Jonathan Curiel 06/27/04 >> go there
