Over time, an African Diaspora of female singers such as Marian Anderson, Mahalia Jackson, Bessie Smith, Abbey Lincoln and Celia Cruz have sung with voices that were rich and dark, as if rooted in the soil of Africa.
During the early 1960s, South African singer Miriam Makeba, "Mama Africa," brought the robust and earthy sounds of the African continent to America in songs such as "Pata Pata."
On her "Reflections," her new "Heads Up" collection, the 72-year-old singer revisits that "Pata Pata," while exploring the sounds of the Americas on tunes such as "Mas Que Nada." 06/24/04 >> go there
