The World, Global Hits -- Miriam Makeba >>
South African superstar Miriam Makeba has recorded dozens of albums in her 50-year-long career. Her latest CD,released this week, honors the tenth anniversary of the end of apartheid in South Africa.
Makeba's new album is entitled "Reflections." It features new arrangements of some of Makeba's most famous songs.
"The Click Song" is one of them. The word "Click" refers to the tongue sound made by speakers of the Xhosa language.
Makeba became a major international star after she met American singer Harry Belafonte in New York in 1959.
Belafonte took Makeba under her wing, and over the years, they recorded many songs together.
In her new album, Makeba sings a new version of one called "Pata Pata."
The 72-year-old singer has been politically engaged all her life. She was outspoken in her opposition to South Africa's apartheid system.
In 1968, Makeba married controversial Black Panther leader Stokely Carmichael. Soon after, Makeba's US career started to decline.
Eventually she and Carmichael moved to Guinea, in West Africa. She would remain in exile for 30 years, until the end of the apartheid era. 06/23/04 >> go there
