Raised on revered West African griot instruments but then happily infused as a youth with Cuban music, “Diamond Fingers” Diabaté has been the most influential guitarist from Guinea for almost 45 years.  His group, Bembeya Jazz, became the first “nationalized” orchestra in the country in 1961 under Guinea’s first post-independence president, Sekou Toure.  Now comes a rare solo album recorded between tours and it simply underscores this gifted man’s talents.  While Guitar Fo would be better without the few vocals that are there, it is no less a blessing for those who love African guitar.  Without brash showmanship Diabaté introduces original compositions along with classics from his group’s repertoire.  ****

Bembeya Jazz with guitarist Sékou Diabaté performs this Saturday at le Medley during Festival Nuits d’Afrique.
