Los Angeles Times, CD Review >>
The lead guitarist for the veteran Guinean Afro-pop band Bembeya Jazz, Diabete has rightfully earned the nickname "Diamond Fingers." "Guitar Fo" showcases him in a different setting, mostly playing acoustic guitar with sparse, unobtrusive backing. A few tracks display the searing virtuosity of his Bembeya performances. But most of the album reveals a far more diverse range of styles, from lyrical ballads and Caribbean rhythms to - unexpectedly - Hawaiian steel guitar. 08/01/04
