Malian guitarist Ali Farka Toure, nomadic Saharan guitar band Tinariwen, Malian singer Oumou Sangarè, world fusion group Lo’jo, and Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant are among the 30 acts who participated in the Festival in the Desert, held 40 miles outside of Timbuktu, Mali, in January 2003.  A 20-track audio CD was released last year, and World village (www.worldvillagemusic.com) has recently issued the Festival in the Desert DVD, a concise 52-minute film by Lionel Brouet that includes performances from the historic three-day event.
