The Star, CD Review >>

Tinariwen are Touareg troubadours of rock who have dodged guerrilla attacks in the hostile deserts of Mali and participated in insurgencies for territorial control. Legend has it members of Tinariwen rode into battles with Stratocasters on their backs and AK-47s by their sides.

In Amassakoul (World Village; 2003), Tinariwen assail us with Malian melodies, raw vocals, female choral contributions and low-slung guitar as pioneered by Mali’s best, Ali Farka Toure. The clap-along appeal form the body of their work while the songs refer to the struggle of the Touaregs – traders and cattle breeders – for self-determination. It is an album that not only instructs and informs but – in the days of false music and heroism – enriches.
