The band Tinariwen, for instance, members of the southern Saharan Kel Tamashek people from Mali, originally formed in 1982 in a Libyan guerrilla training camp, from where they went on to fight in an armed rebellion against government persecution: their lead singer Ibrahim Ag al-Habib was jailed for his pains, and their music was officially banned until a peace accord was reached in 1996.
