One World Concert Series will offer the Rogue Valley a glimpse of the Festival in the Desert, an annual event in Africa, with a presentation Thursday, April 20, at the Ashland Historic Armory.

The original Festival in the Desert began in 2001 as a stage for song, dance, poetry, camel racing, sword fighting, games and other cultural pursuits.

The festival has become traditional gathering of the Tuareg people, a tribe of the African Sahara. The festival welcomes artists from around the world.

The Ashland event will be hosted by Markus James and the musical group Tinariwen.

Markus James is an American musician who has performed at the original Festival of the Desert in 2003 and 2004,

His blues-style music is influenced by travels to Africa, where he collaborated with local musicians to create a unique sound.

James is currently touring with Malian musician and singer Mamadou Sidibe. Their songs feature vocals that alternate between the languages of Bambara, Sonrai and English.

Tinariwen is a world-famous band of men and women from the Tuareg tribe of the Adrar des Iforas in the African country of Mali. The guitar band is closely linked to the exile of the Tuareg from Mali and the tribe's refuge in Algeria. Tinariwen communicates themes of exile and opposition in its songs.

The band's musical style, called Tishoumaren, draws inspiration from the music of Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and John Lennon as well as the traditional music of the Tuareg.

The music calls for political awakening and consciousness of the tribe's exile and repression.
