Town & Village , CD Review >>

Tinariwen is an outstanding group from Mali who performed several numbers on the Malaria Concert DVD. Their latest CD is "Amassakoul" (on World Village). The members are from the nomadic desert dwellers, the Tuaregs.
The name of the band means "deserts" or "empty places." They use electric guitars and the sound and language are often as scorching as their native habitat. The songs, mostly by vocalists Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and Alhousseini Abdouldahi, are poetic and often painful. For ex ample, in "Arawan," Abdouldahi sings of "the world in flight" in which "Nobody cares about the people of the desert who are suffering from thirst." In another, Alhabib evokes the music that takes him far away "to the clear light of morn ing where before my heart the brilliance of the stars goes out."
Fortunately, "Amassakoul" contains full translations for the songs on the album, a ne cessity for fully appreciating this group.
On May 1 at 9:30 and 11:30 p.m., Tinariwen will appear at Joe's Pub (425 Lafayette St.; 212.839.8778) (www.joespub.com).  04/27/06
