World 2004 (Wrasse/English import) is a comprehensive, two-disc anthology that truly adheres to its title. The 34 performances include snippets of almost every conceivable type of popular music in Africa, Latin America, and even parts of Europe. There are examples of reggae mixed with West African rhythms, a band called Wax Poetic that blends Turkish influences with rock and roll, Brazilian and Venezuelan ensembles, and groups from Spain, Mali, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Algeria and New Zealand among others. The selections were made by veteran British journalist Charlie Gillett, who picked adventurous items from 28 countries. Unfortunately, Wrasse releases are extremely hard to find in America, which makes landing this worthy sampler a tough task. Highlights include the tunes from the Congo (Kekele and Kanda Bongo Man), Mali (Tinariweh and Idrissa Soumaoro) and Ethiopia (Abyssinia Infinte), as well as Brazil (Fat Marley, DJ Dolores Orchestra Santa Massa) and France (Carla Bruni, Aiwa). 08/13/04
