Lined up against Eminem's profane satirical onslaught, Senegalese rap doesn't have a hope, but in isolation When Wrasse released Daara J's 'Boomerang' in thedoldrums of 2003, a lot of people shrugged their shoulders after all, British rap gets short shrift, how could Africans do it any better? But Wrasse were surfing a wave that has yet to hit land. Be prepared, this coming summer the hottest thing on the streets is going to be rapping in tongues. It's one of the benefits of living in a multicultural society.
Exhibit A: the sold out signs at Orishas (Cuban) gigs in London. Exhibit B: the sales of Sultan Tung (Turkey) in Harringay. Exhibit C: Big Brovas' Skillz sideline as JJC, the leader of 419 Squad, Nigeria's most promising export. If you need to get ahead of the crowd, your point of entry could be the compilation'Global Hip Hop' (Manteca). But if you want to be with the masses, Saturday night there's only one place to be. If you're searching for gangsta rap, keep looking, because Daara J's mix of Wolof lyrics, French-speaking MCs and Cuban, African and Jamaican rhythms holds little for aficionados of blunt, bitches and banging braggadocio. And if you long for old-school B-boy dance music with a conscience, you're just going to have to trust us that that's what Daara J are all about. Fun 'n' funky stuff. 03/04/04
