World Rhythm, CD Review >>

The title reflects the mindset and musical quest for the members of Daara J, Senegal’s premier hip-hop outfit. Member Faada Freddy explains that tasso is the original form of rap, ancient rhythmic poetry that expressed the daily lives in the Senegalese region of Africa. Hip-Hop’s appeal is now truly global and constantly blends and mixes with various cultures and music in new exciting ways.

Although looking at the cover picture one might be tempted to think they are lads from some disparate part of a city in America but put the CD on and right away you know this is not your everyday rap recording. Spitting lyrics rapped and sung in French no about your typical machismo and materialistic matter but rather uplifting concerns about living conditions, the environment and hopes for the future. Daara J actually means, “school of life”. So to hear how hip-hop music is “Boomeranging” back to Africa check out the CD.
