Daara J offers a contemporary corallary by Africanizing hip hop. In the title track, the trio raps fast enough to make the American MC Twista sound tongue-tied. In "Esperanza," the group displays the considerable beauty of its melodies.

It's the tunesmanship on the CD that really stands out. "Boomerang" ranks among the melodically sophisticated and fluid hip-hop albums of this decade.

Over the course of its 14 tracks, the group takes influences from French pop, reggae and Latin music. In that sense, it's true world music. But Daara J filters all those styles through sensibilities and sounds that could come only from its own continent. 03/27/05
