Senegalese hip-hoppers Daara J share a knack for crafting MTV-worthy beats with their American contemporaries. But the West African trio eschews the "look how bad I am" posturing that's reduced mainstream hip-hop here in the States to a parody of itself, preferring instead to carry the activist torch. For instance, during the 2000 Senegalese presidential election, the trio's participation in an anti-corruption campaign helped increase voter turnout and oust a corrupt regime that had dominated political life in Senegal for decades.
