Pasadena Weekly, CD Review >>
Place this at the top of the growing heap of ear-pleasing hip-hop emanating from various regions of Africa. Less abrupt, more rhythmically sophisticated and socio-politically outspoken than most of their American counterparts, this trio links the Senegalese tradition of tasso (rhythmic spoken poetry) to American rap over horns, bass, flute, accordion, guitar, percussion and masterfully arrange harmonies. Their timely lyrics – rapped in Wolof, French, English and Spanish – address such issues as displacement, poverty, globalization and the state of the world (“Bobb sa Bopp”: “Welcome to the world of loonies/ Where hatred has become commonplace”). Serious, street-savvy, and incongruously graceful. At the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday. 07/21/05
