By Rob Thomas Whether the words are spoken or sung, everybody will have something to say at the Wisconsin Union Theater on Saturday night.
The theater in the UW Memorial Union, 800 Langdon St., is combining the Wisconsin Youth Speaks' Spoken Word Finals with a performance by politically conscious hip-hop outfit Daara J. And when it's over, all will get a chance to rest their vocal chords and dance to the rhythms of the Atimevu Drum and Dance Ensemble in the Rathskeller.
Tickets for all three events are $18, available through the theater box office at 262-2201, while high school and college students will get a steep discount with a ticket price of just $10.
Things will kick off at 7 p.m. with the spoken word finals, featuring area high school students competing for the chance to head to New York City for the national Youth Speaks finals. The Senegalese band Daara J, performing at 8:30 p.m., is a kindred spirit to such an open-minded and full-voiced event, performing hip-hop that conveys a message of peace, unity and social justice. The band's debut album is called "Boomerang." Wisconsin Union Daara J is from Senegal.
