Tonight, MTV bases its first party on Africa >>

By Kim Clayton-Millar

It's party groove time for the pan-African music channel MTV base which celebrates its first birthday today. To acknowledge 365 good music-filled days since MTV base's African debut, the network has loaded its schedule with a fabulous day of programming.

Goodies to be found on the channel today include the international television premiere of World Wide Thing: Africa, which is a celebration of African music. The show is hosted by none other than US hip-hop star Ludacris and will air from 4-4.30pm CAT.

In an exciting shout out for African contemporary artists, this show will also air on MTV base's sister channel, MTV2 in the USA, as part of its Black History Month which is themed "Sucker Free Sunday" , going out to MTV viewers everywhere on Sunday at 2pm. This initiative will put current African artists into 58-million US homes - reaching almost 60% of the US population.

World Wide Thing: Africa is a half-hour TV special shot in the USA and spotlights music videos from six of Africa's most creative musicians.

The lineup includes the lively Clap Song by local hip-hop group Skwatta Kamp, who performed live with Ludacris at the MTV base 100th Live! concert in Johannesburg in April 2005. Other tracks are: Lahl'Umlenze from South African's Thandiswa, Boomerang from Senegalese hip-hop outfit Daara J and Soobax from Somalian solo hip-hop artist, K'Naan.

Nigeria's 2-FACE Idibia, famous for being the first artist to have his video played on MTV base, presents his popular track Ifana Ibaga and the show rounds off with Y'en A Marre from Ivory Coast's reggae star Tiken Jah Fakoly.

Today and throughout this week, MTV base will be operating a birthday playlist, giving prime spots to the artists and videos that made an impact on the channel its first year.

Among these will be Nigerian R&B duo, P-Square, Kenyan rap/reggae combo Necessary Noize and South African soulstress Zamajobe Sithole. 02/22/06 >> go there
