Choying Drolma is a Tibetan Buddhist nun and Steve Tibbetts an experimental guitarist with roots in world and prog rock, which sounds like it could be a recipe for disaster. But Selwa, recorded in Bouthhanath, a Tibetan enclave in Nepal, is actually a beautiful record. Drolma's voice is haunting and ethereal, layered with Tibbetts's lush, ambient guitar parts on this collection of devotional chants and meditations - both Tibetan and Hindu - rounded out by the percussion work of Marc Anderson. This is not one of those bland, canned, Buddhism-lite recordings embraced by cheese-meisters and swannabes, but a truly moving piece of work. - Elizabeth Bromstein 11/17/04 >> go there
