The Boston Herald, Jazz/World; On Peruvian scene, it's all about Eva, by Bob Young >>
The era has long passed when Brazil was the first country that came to mind when the subject of contemporary South American music came up.
Nowadays, you're as likely to discover that a pop group hails from Colombia as to learn a tango ensemble is from Argentina. Thanks to vocalist Susana Baca, Peru entered the North American musical consciousness last decade.
In Peru itself, however, singer Eva Ayllon arguably ranks even higher on the popularity meter than Baca.
With more than 20 albums to her name, Ayllon has been building a following for decades as one of Peru's foremost interpreters of MUSICA CRIOLLA (creole music), a sound with African and Spanish roots tied to syncopated polkas and waltzes.
Ayllon is more than a traditionalist, though, which is one reason she recently drew more than 20,000 to a concert in Lima, Peru, celebrating her 30 years in the business.
She makes a rare Boston appearance on Sunday at Berklee Performance Center.
"I'm a black woman from a country that's very diverse," she said in Spanish through an interpreter. "My music takes its diversity from the coasts, where some black people dance with no shoes and long skirts and others dance with shoes and short skirts.
"The music is meant to help with the healing process, and to bring joy and happiness to people."
Eva Ayllon performs at 7 p.m. Sunday at Berklee Performance Center, 136 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Tickets are $ 28.50-$ 35.50 advance, $ 33.50-$ 40.50 day of show. Call 617-747-2261. 08/22/03
