Most Latin-American nations are cultural melting pots, where Spanish or Portuguese influences melded in different ways with attributes of Native Americans and African slaves. Peruvian singer Eva Ayllon, a star in South America, has explored the alloys of her homeland's culture over a 30-year career. Her new CD showcases her resilient, elastic voice--capable of great technical feats, soaring drama and smoldering sensuality--in settings that include rhythmically slippery torch ballads, furious numbers that echo flamenco and orchestrated songs that conjure up the Cuba of Buena Vista Social Club.
