Musical discoveries
Go globe- and genre-hopping this weekend

By GREG HAYMES, Staff writer

Those interested in exploring the music of the southern hemisphere of the New World should head to Proctor's Theatre (432 State St., Schenectady), which is hosting the world music concert "Latinas: Women of Latin America" at 8 p.m. Saturday. A cross-section of contemporary and traditional Latin American music, the concert features Toto La Momposina (from Mompos Island in Columbia's Magdalena River, where the cultures of Native Indians and escaped slaves converged), Belo Velloso (the niece of Caetano Velloso, who has been called "the Bob Dylan of Brazil") and exiled songstress Mariana Montalvo (who blends the traditional music of her Chilean homeland with the lush poetry of nueva cancion). Walter Ramos of Mundo Neuva will offer a short talk about Latin American music at 6:30 p.m. free to ticketholders.
