PUTUMAYO PRESENTS LATINAS: WOMEN OF LATIN AMERICA  CD & TOUR
--
This CD release and tour are taking place at just the right time.  Folks that are feeling the end-of-summer or U.S. election blues can pop this joyful compilation into their CD player and watch those blues disappear.  The CD compilation features women vocalists from Peru (Susana Baca, Tania Libertad), Brazil (Adriana Calcanhotto, Monica Salmaso, Belo Velloso), Chile (Mariana Montalvo, Jacqueline Fuentes), Columbia (Marta Gomez, Totò La Momposina) and Mexico (Lila Downs and Lhasa) and the warm vocals will melt the blues away.  The songs flow at an even pace featuring guitar, light percussion, horns, strings and traditional instruments.  Many of the women vocalists are already on some people's list of favorites and the other lesser known performers will soon be on the same lists.

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about a compilation album that features women voices with a traditional musical backdrop.  Putumayo Presents Latinas hits the right spot.  The vocals are immaculate and possess rich tones.  Although the songs groove at a slow tempo, each of the women artists presents the unique rhythms of her Native land whether that is Afro-Peruvian polyphonic rhythms or bossa nova or something from an ancient indigenous heartbeat.  I enjoy all the tracks and my only complaint is that the CD is too short, lasting less than 40 minutes.  After all, Latin America is flowing over with talented musicians and a 2-CD set or a box set of these artists would be greatly appreciated.  As it is, you'll probably hit re-play a few times so that you can stretch the enjoyable experience this CD creates.

Putumayo is launching its thematic tours with Putumayo Presents Latinas: Women of Latin America which begins October 8th and crisscrosses the U.S.  The tour features Mariana Montalvo, Belo Velloso and Totò La Momposina.  Monica Salmaso and Lila Downs who also appear on the CD are currently touring the U.S. although, separate from the Putumayo tour.  Please see the Cranky Crow Events Calendar for details.  For those who won't be able to catch any of these fabulous women in concert, pick up this compilation.  The shimmering collection of songs will lighten up any dark mood and spread joy in your life.  More than ever, it is important to support the artistic achievements of women and this is a good place to begin.

Putumayo World Music celebrates 11 years of introducing people to music and culture from around the globe.  The well-known and respected world music label found its origins in a small ethnic shop in New York City after its founders had traveled to some far-off places.  Today the label is mostly known for its diverse compilations, many of which feature women's voices.  This pioneering label introduces a new concept once again, by offering the public thematic tours of the musicians that appear on the compilations.  Putumayo Presents Latinas: Women of Latin America kicks off this new adventure.
