Like your music with an exotic, other worldly edge? Consider these globe-hopping musical options for the weekend.
[excerpt]
For world music purists, the best of the lot is Saturday (Oct. 16) night's "Latinas: Women of Latin America" coming to Rutgers Camden's Gordon Theater.
The first touring show sponsored by the smart Putumayo music label, the lineup offers three exhilarating divas:
• Chilean artist-in-exile Mariana Montalvo blends traditional music with the lush poetry of nueva cancion.
• Hailing from Mompos Island in Colombia's Magdalena River, Toto La Momposina celebrates a place where the cultures of Native Indians and escaped African slaves converged, producing highly rhythmic music supported by blasting horns and flutes made of cactus.
• Devotees of Brazilian samba and bossa nova music will embrace Belo Velloso, a niece of Caetano Velloso and Maria Bethania, and a product of the music-rich Bahia region
(8 p.m., Gordon Theater, 313 N. 5th St., Camden, $19 and $14, 856-225-2700). 10/15/04 >> go there
