Women of Latin America' class in session at Rialto

Published on: 10/27/04

IF ALL YOU'VE EVER KNOWN is English-language pop, world music can be intimidating. All those countries, all those languages, all those foreign genres. Seemingly mindful of this, the Putumayo series CDs act as helpful starter kits — they're like "World Music for Dummies." The "Women of Latin America" disc takes you through five countries with 11 artists, and three of those artists are coming to Atlanta to perform Friday at the Rialto.

Mariana Montalvo will be among the performers
Friday night at the Rialto Center.  The Chilean vocalist Mariana Montalvo has a low, smoldering voice that drips with romance. Belo Velloso is the niece of Brazil's legendary Caetano Veloso, and her Putumayo song "Toda Sexta-Feira" sways like the best Astrud Gilberto (You know, she sang "The Girl From Ipanema."). The veteran Toto La Momposina (Columbia) gets the record's last cut, the stirring "Yo Me Llamo Cumbia,"
and if she performs it Friday, you can expect her to bring down the house.
