Women of Latin America

Various Artists

Putumayo

Toto La Momposina, Mariana Montalvo and Belo Velloso may not be household names here in the U.S., but the three Latina divas are legends in their home countries of Colombia, Chile and Brazil (respectively).  The women share their music and culture on the new release Women of Latin America.  While their styles are very different, it is possible to hear common bonds that connect the three powerful ladies.

Montalvo is a bit more poetic, Momposina more rooted in the drum culture of Colombia and Velloso has samba and bossa nova in her blood.  Listeners will feel the ladies’ for their culture as well as their happiness and sadness.

The Women of Latin America will be performing at the American Theatre in Hampton Oct. 24 and 25.  The shows begin at 7:30 on both nights.  Tickets are $30 and $25.  For more information, log on to www.theamericantheatre.com or call 722-2787.
