There is a sadness that accompanies exile. You can hear it in the music of Chilean-born singer Mariana Montalvo.

Singer Mariana Montalvo left her native Chile in 1974 a few months after the coup that toppled and killed President Salvador Allende. Montalvo has been living in France ever since. But she has never forgotten her South-American roots.Montalvo's music relies on latino-american poetry. Even though she's lived in France for 30 years she always sings in Spanish. Her new album "piel de aceituna" is no exception.

Montalvo is also featured on a Putumayo collection of Latin American female singers and she begins touring the US this month.

Even though her music claims her latino-american identity, Montalvo says she has a passion for French singer-songwriters. Speaking to The World's Marco Werman, she says what she found in France was an intellectual and cultural haven.
