WORLD VILLAGE/
Monica Salmaso
Iaiá (CD)
Monica Salmaso is an interpreter of a wide range of Brazilian music, and on this new CD, Iaiá, she pays tribute to a vast array of Brazilian legends and songwriters. Monica opens by paying homage to Brazilian singer Clementina de Jesus with “Moro Na Roca,” the rhythmic “Cabrochinha,” the beautifully sung poem “Estrela de Oxum,” the story of love and revenge in “Vinganca,” the beautiful “Por Toda a Minha Vida,” and the delicate “Assum Branco.” Monica makes many of these songs her own, continuing with the sambas, “Cidade Lagoa” and “Doce Na Fiera,” plus the melancholy “Onde Ir,” taking a song from legendary composer Dorival Caymmi collection titled “É Doce Morrer No Mar,” putting the final touches on this international album gem with “Na Aldeia.” 10/15/04
