Review - Lebanese composer and oud genius (it’s an Arabic lute) Marcel Khalife pickles Arabic traditional music with a precision and oftentimes bucks strict traditionalism to increase awareness of Arab culture amid the crisis of New World Order-esque Americana culture that increasingly invades both physically and metaphorically the rest of the world. The unique instrumentation is lush with percussion consisting of riq, tabla, vibraphone, congras, bongos, and mazhar. Despite the ravaged status of some of the concert halls in Lebanon during its civil war, they found Marcel Khalife playing and spreading his love for his music and the great Arab poetry. He continues in that vein to this very day and continues to impress his mastery of complex musical scales known as maqams. Stunning and original, “Caress” is a beacon of hope in a world that knows far too much pain and suffering.
