Today we're going to leave you with new music from Lebanese musician Marcel Khaliffe. He takes his oud, that's the Arab lute, and breaks out of the middle eastern mold. In fact, his new album called "Caress" has a jazzy touch.

Khalife is known for setting arab poetry to music. But his new album is entirely instrumental. He recorded with his quartet called "Al Mayadine". The quartet includes Arab, African and western instruments. Yet it's a bit like a jazz quartet, complete with a double-bass.

Two of his sons play in the ensemble. One plays the piano. The other plays percussion and the vibraphone.

Khalife's new album contains several tunes dedicated to his friends who've passed away. One track is a tribute to Edward Said, the Palestinian scholar who died last year.

The late Edward Said knew Khalife well and loved his music. Said was a professor of Comparative Literature at Columbia University in New York, but he was also a music critic and a pianist. He once said that Khalife had become a hero of Arabic song all over the Arab world because he transcends the national boundaries of his music.

Marcel Khalife and his quartet "al Mayadin" begin a US tour this month.
