Marcel Khalifé Caress/Mouda’aba Nagam Records From Lebanese-rooted music with a contemporary twist to captivating jazz riffs and humorous variations on “Happy Birthday” (of all things), this disc stands apart. Through oud (Arabic lute) player Marcel Khalifé and his Al Mayadine Quartet speaks music of rebel souls with a mission. Khalifé, 54, was born into a Christian family in Lebanon. With childhood influences as diverse as Christian music, Islamic recitations of the Koran, and Arabic sea chanties, he has created a music that defies categories. Devoted to the cause of reconciliation and peace, the of late Parisian resident has become a cultural icon in the Arabic world. Since several members of the quartet have received both Lebanese and Euro-American classical/jazz training in numerous countries, their music is less of a place than reflective of a trans-national mindset. When you hear pieces such as “Samaï Bayati” (winner of the 1974 Arab Music Foundation Award), you will immediately recognize a distinctive and compelling voice. Khalife’s fall US tour has taken/takes him to Ann Arbor, Houston, Sante Fe, Montreal, Boston, San Francisco (11/4), Seattle, Redondo Beach (11/6), Boulder (11/7), Washington DC (11/12), NYC (11/13), and Chicago (11/14). -- Jason Victor Serinus 11/11/04
