Marcel Khalife "Caress": If there¹s one thing to take from 2004, it¹s how much beautiful music came from outside the Western domain.
Marcel Khalife¹s "Caress" takes the Eastern world and gels it with a Western flourish. The result is a blend of all that¹s right with our troubled planet. There are jazz intonations that meld surprisingly well with Khalife¹s instrument, the oud, a stringed instrument that looks and sounds like a cross between a guitar and a mandolin. The piano on this disc sounds incredible, the acoustics are angelic, but then all of the instruments shine. "With All the Love," track 5, is a slant on "Happy Birthday," but you¹ve never heard this standard so serene and unique. (www.marcelkhalife.com)
