Dirty Linen, CD Review >>
It's said that a record is a sum of its parts, and with Lo'Jo there are such glorious and rewarding parts. The basis is French, but it's so much more: Spanish, North and West African, Gypsy, and English are just part of the equation. Vocalist Denis Pean has one of those world-weary, lived-in, Tom Waits-style voices that conveys so much. He also writes most of the lyrics and adds spoken-word pieces. The instrumental backing is equally diverse: bass drums, fiddle, piano, harmonium, and guitars, as well as the more exotic imzad (one-string fiddle) and West Aftrican lute. The material for this live recording is drawn from earlier albums plus some new material, and the live sound is both bright and clean. Also included is a bonus CD-ROM video track, "Tangito in Pictures." Because Lo'Jo's November-December 2004 tour was cancelled, thsi might be the closest we get to seeing the band live. Highly recommended.
