Haiti seems to suffer one tragedy after another, from hurricanes to crushing poverty tyranny.  Singer-songwriter Emeline Michel, known as “the queen of Haitian song,” seems to embody all the pain and joy of her island.  On her stunning new album, “Raisin Kreyol” (on Times Square Records), she sings in the French dialect of her homeland, “We don’t want to die before our children can see our country back on its feet.  We don’t want to die without going back to Haiti no no no.”  But don’t think her songs exude unrelenting despair.  On the contrary, she recalls better times in her neighborhood and sings a lilting tune about a schoolgirl’s romance.  The a cappella opening establishes the beauty of her singing voice and her music covers a multitude of styles, from French ballads to Caribbean and African rhythms.  The multi-talented Michel penned most of the songs, worked on the arrangements and often provides backup choruses to her own vocals.  On “Ban’m La Jwa” (Give Me Joy), she sings, “Give me compassion to give the passion.”  Her album exemplifies both qualities.  On Friday, November 5, Emeline Michel will perform at SOBs (204 Varick Streetat West Houston St.; (212)307-7171; www.sobs.com).
